Paralysis

Cook County Anesthesia Malpractice Attorney

Many people do not fully realize potential risks of spinal anesthesia. They do not know that paralysis can occur when spinal anesthesia is given improperly, and discover the devastating truth when they or a loved one is injured.

At Cirignani Heller & Harman, LLP, in Chicago, Illinois, our training and experience gives us the ability to recognize anesthesia errors when other lawyers miss them. At times, the evidence of these errors is so well hidden in the medical records that even medical experts hired by other attorneys to review cases cannot locate them. Our in-depth review allows us to discover how medical malpractice affected your life and hold anesthesiologists, hospitals and health care providers responsible for the harm they caused you.

Even if another law firm has turned you down, we may be able to find the evidence of negligence needed to pursue your case. Don’t give up. Contact us today for a free case review by a lawyer who is also a medical doctor.

How Epidural (Spinal) Anesthesia Negligence Leads to Paralysis

Negligent administration of epidural anesthesia can lead to paralysis in several ways. Sometimes, the patient may be given the wrong kind of medication — often one to which he or she is allergic. In other cases, too much medication is used.

Very large doses of epidural anesthetic can cause respiratory paralysis. This paralysis of the intercostal muscles (the muscles between the ribs) and diaphragm occurs when the epidural blocks the intercostal and phrenic nerves, which supply the diaphragm. Patients are unable to breathe. Their heart rate and blood pressure drops — and emergency treatment is necessary to save their lives.

Nerve damage can also be caused by a spinal epidural. Victims experience paralysis, such as paraplegia and quadriplegia, which affects every aspect of their lives, including bladder and bowel function and sexual function.
